“Like many, we moved to Newton to raise our family,” Getz said on her campaign website. “We chose Newton because of its walkable neighborhood schools, historic village centers and abundant green open space.”

More than 16,000 voters cast ballots in Newton’s municipal elections on Tuesday night. Incumbent Andreae Downs and candidate Rena Getz each won a councilor-at-large seat for Ward 5, with Downs receiving 7,728 votes and Getz receiving 7,776 votes.

Rena will bring both a strong village voice and equally strong citywide experiences to the City Council. She possesses deep institutional knowledge. This is a potent combination of skills that will serve both the city and city council in good stead. 

In my extensive conversations with them, I’ve found them to be both supportive of Newton Public Schools and interested in promoting a more collaborative approach.

I am endorsing the following City Council candidates – Rena Getz, Alan Lobovits, Lisa Gordon, Randy Block, Stephen Farrell, and David Micley.

In the At Large races, I will vote for Alan Lobovits and Rena Getz and ONLY them in those races to increase the power of my votes by not giving votes to candidates with whom I disagree and I don’t feel represent me.

Currently serving as President of the Waban Area Council, she has led the way in transparency in local government and education about City Hall policies and how they might affect residents.

I am particularly impressed by Rena’s deep knowledge of zoning, land use, housing, historic preservation, and open space issues.

Rena is statesman, a thoughtful leader who deeply cares about our lives in Newton and is willing and able to work hard to maintain what we have and still grow the City.
